Couples Retreat: The Whole Gang

This week the Bora Bora comedy, Couples Retreat with Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Faizon Love and Kali Hawk hits theaters. With so many comedians all jam packed into one film, I’m sure you’re all looking forward to seeing your favorite actor strut their stuff in a laugh out loud comedy. Sadly, it’s not that movie. This is definitely a film that was more fun to shoot than it was to watch.

Check out the review below…

The iPod Movie Players:

  • Director: Peter Billingsley
  • Writers: Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, and Dana Fox
  • Cast: Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman, Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, Faizon Love and Kali Hawk, with Jean Reno and Peter Serafinowicz

The iPod Movie Plot:

One couple, obsessed with organization decides to call it quits, but not before giving it one last go at a “couple retreat.” The problem is, they can only afford the group rate. With a promise that it will be nothing from Pina Coladas and jet skis, even the reluctant couples decide to take the journey and all four couples set out to save or improve their relationships. They quickly realize that participation in the resort’s therapy sessions is not optional and at times can be dangerous. Let the comedy ensue!

The iPod Movie Good:

  • The Setting: They’re in Bora Bora… cool.
  • Jon Favreau: He played the only role that stood out in the film. One could argue that his character didn’t even fit into this movie, and I would say that’s a good thing. He seemed to be the only one having fun with his character not just the setting. He took some risks and his improv is as good as ever.
  • Good Times: The film looked like it was a blast to shot! Couple that with a great cast of friends and I’m sure they had a lot of fun, sadly the the result was anything but fun…

The iPod Movie Bad:

  • The Plot: Everything about the film seemed forced. Getting them too the Island takes so much unnecessary time. Why not just have four couples who are all in need of a break and then cut to Bora Bora? Do we really need to drag it out for twenty minutes? We all know they’re going! And once there, do they HAVE to all come together at the same time with cheesy monologues that seemingly take 10 hours?
  • The Dialogue: The words “forced,” “contrived,” “disingenuous,” and “unnecessary” all come to mind when I think about some of the dialogue in this film. Thank god there were a few moments where we got to see Faverau and Vaughn’s good old witty improv routine because if not for that, there really wasn’t much there. Although if you really want to see them at their height, so rent Swingers.
  • Cheap Gags: I guess when you have nothing strong, you rely on penis jokes and PG-13 nudity. Neither of which were done well enough to work. They weren’t enough obscenities to get a Bruno or Hangover gasp and yet there were some scenes that were just over the top and far to long. A guy in a speedo is funny for about 30 seconds, not 5 minutes. They ended up with a very toned down feel, which made this a very middle of the road comedy. At times it almost felt as if they weren’t able to get out of the box so they were trying to pry it open.
  • Covering all the Characters: They seemed to concerned with making sure each character had a full dramatic art that the pacing of the film dragged on. Going back to the penis joke, couldn’t just ONE couple have that problem? Do we really have to see it with all four of them equally? EVERY time with EVERY joke?
  • The Ending: Where the hell did his wife show up from? “Oh, I heard that you were going to an Island at the saloon so I spent thousands of dollars and hung out with a bunch of kids in a bikini for 4 days until you found your way over.” WHAT?!? Come on, I’m one for letting things go for “movie magic” but that’s just plan old stupid.

iPod Movie Overall:

I get that this wasn’t meant to be the best movie of the year, but it wasn’t even fun to watch. I’m so glad they had a fun time shooting it, but it’s not fun for the audience. That being said, there were people in the theater laughing, so maybe it’s just me! Just make sure you have a few strong drinks before going in and I’m sure it won’t be too bad.

legion1kj10 01 19 Legion: Movie Review

Legion is the latest post-apocalyptic film to hit the market, and it stars Paul Bettany in an unconventional yet angelic role. The movie marks the first major release for writer/director Scott Stewart, who’s been on the visual effects side of filmmaking for years, but is now working on bringing his own projects to life. Legion is a Christian-themed movie, with a splash of zombie-horror, Western ideals, and a whole lot of action.

The iPod Movie Players:

  • Director: Scott Stewart
  • Writers: Peter Schink and Scott Stewart
  • Cast: Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, Tyrese Gibson, Doug Jones, Kate Walsh
  • Cinematography: John Lindley
  • Music: John Frizzell

The iPod Movie Plot:

When God grows tired of humans and their disobedience, he sends the Archangel Michael (Bettany) to wipe them off the face of the earth. More specifically he needs to kill the one child that can stop God’s wrath and save mankind. The only problem is that child hasn’t been born yet, and the mother is a waitress at a small diner in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Michael defies God’s Will and decides to save the child, which turns the restaurant into a war zone between heaven and earth. He will have to combat an entire legion of angels led by the heavily favored, Gabriel.

The iPod Movie Good:

  • Entertaining: The film has plenty of action but it wasn’t filled with over the top gore. There was a decent amount of entertainment value within the characters and their interactions with one another outside of the violence.
  • The Dumb Moments: There is nothing more annoying than watching a girl run out into a sea of zombies only to meet her maker. The writers did a pretty good job of integrating the characters dumb actions with the story. Although it was clearly to create conflict, the purpose played out very well.

The iPod Movie Bad:

  • You Got The Guns Where?: Paul Bettany starts the movie on a mission to get guns, so he walks into a closed store and grabs a bunch. How does he know that this particular place has the goods? Who knows? It seemed like the shop owner wasn’t even aware that there was enough ammo to arm a small militia in the back room. Check that off things to explain to the audience.
  • The Acting: There were moments, flashes even, where the acting of the two main characters, Charlie and Jeep (Black), was some of the worse I’d ever seen. And even the ridiculously talented Charles S. Dutton found himself muttering in a bad southern accent.
  • The Names: This may be a little nit-picky, but the name Jeep is lame. Obviously the writers were trying to get creative, but that one was just a little too much. Every time the waitress Charlie screamed his name it sounded like, “Cheep! Cheep! Cheeeep!”
  • Defies Logic: Without giving too much away there are several issues with Charlie and all things related to her baby. First of all, a woman that is eight months pregnant will not be as agile as she is. Two, she smokes (enough said). Three, she has the superhuman ability of giving birth in a minute. Apparently, the key to easy childbirth is Paul Bettany coaxing you along. Finally, not only can she pop that thing out like a torpedo, but she is up and running around just minutes after without any sort of medical care or anesthesia. One can only suspend belief up to a certain point.
  • Miscasting: This problem is very closely related to the bad acting. A few of the casting choices were not as good as they could have been. Kate Walsh was irritating and not nearly old enough to have a teenage daughter. There were a few issues with Dennis Quaid as well, which is unfortunate considering his acting background.

iPod Movie Overall:

Surprisingly, this movie was actually enjoyable, and is a good popcorn flick to see over the weekend. The plot and parts of the film are certainly flawed, but all in all it was still entertaining, and that’s what you’re paying for.

  • The Dumb Moments: There is nothing more annoying than watching a girl run out into a sea of zombies only to meet her maker. The writers did a pretty good job of integrating the characters dumb actions with the story. Although it was clearly to create conflict, the purpose played out very well.

The Zune Movie Bad:

Zune Movie Overall:

Surprisingly, this movie was actually enjoyable, and is a good popcorn flick to see over the weekend. The plot and parts of the film are certainly flawed, but all in all it was still entertaining, and that’s what you’re paying for.

From Paris With Love surprised me in many ways. Initially, the thought of John Travolta doing a slightly different version of his character from The Taking of Pelham 123, just didn’t appeal to me. I walked in expecting to laugh and cringe at how horrible it was, but soon discovered that it wasn’t as bad as I thought. It’s not an epic action film that leaves a mark on your life like the first Die Hard, but it has its moments. So, laughter – yes, cringing – minimal.

James Reese (Meyers) is a personal aide to the US Ambassador in France with a side job helping the CIA clean up messes by changing license plates on cars, low level stuff. He is also in love with a beautiful French woman (Smutniak) who proposes to him the night he is given the opportunity he has been waiting for, the chance to become a bonafide secret agent. This is where we meet his new partner, FBI Agent Charlie Wax (Travolta). Wax is a wildman. He doesn’t follow protocol and gets things done in his own way. Reese is uncomfortable. He’s not a man of action. He is a thinker. He likes chess. He can’t call his fiancé because his phone is out of batteries.

iPod Movie Overall:

I was on the edge of my seat and smiling for most of the movie, loving the little homages to Travolta’s character in Pulp Fiction. It was also great that every time there was an opportunity to break some glass, they made it happen. If you want to see a movie that’s not top of the line, but partially entertaining, this is it. Because even though it’s not groundbreaking, I still enjoyed myself.

daybreakers10 1 6 c Daybreakers: Movie Review

Ready for more vampires? Of course you are! No one ever gets sick of them, do they? Hope not because Hollywood isn’t giving until they’ve drained every last cinematic drop from them. Daybreakers has tried to break the mold by making vampires the new human race. Sounds interesting enough, but did they pull it off? It’s debatable, let’s take a look…

Warning: There are some minor spoilers ahead. For those of you who know my reviews, you know that normally I try to avoid all spoilers entirely, but unfortunately I feel like they are both pertinent to the discussion of this film and chances are won’t really effect your viewing experience.

The iPod Movie Players:

  • Directors/Writers: Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig
  • Starring: Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill, Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan, Isabel Lucas
  • Cinematography: Ben Nott
  • Music: Christopher Gordon

The iPod Movie Plot:

The year is 2019 and the world is filled almost entirely with vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

The iPod Movie Good:

  • The Idea: It seems like we already live in a world full of vampires with Twilight, Let Me In, True Blood, Vampire Diaries (and the list continues) dominating our cinemas, TVs and the sides of many buses, so it’s refreshing to see someone try to take a new perspective on the whole craze and come up with a new world for vampires.
  • The Details: To further on the “idea” of the film, they came up with a number of great details that a vampire world would have such as lot of teeth whitening ads, a problem with forest fires (because they burst into flames in the day and can’t put out the fires), and cars that have black-out windows so that they can drive in the day. There was obviously someone who paid attention to details and got creative with it.
  • SFX (part of the time): Some of the special effects were kick-ass and others were not. You could tell when and where they spent their money and when they ran out of it. That being said, when they spent it they did a great job with it. If only someone had given them enough to make the whole film look as good as certain moments.
  • Social-Political Issues: Instead of just making this a cheesy vampire film, they attempt to take on some larger issues that are pertinent to our modern society such as world hunger and a trigger happy military. Although it was nice that they went there, some of the issues felt a bit shoe-horned and therefore never reached there full potential. Nice effort though!

The iPod Movie Bad:

Aside from not having enough money and some sound problems (including Ethan Hawke saying a line when his lips weren’t moving- GASP! ) the main problems that I had with the film stemmed from breaking the normal vampire rules without justification. Lets take a look…

Breaking the Rules:

  • They can eat food and drink things others than blood. They serve coffee with 95% coffee, 5% blood and a dash of cream. The costumers are not happy but they’re able to drink it. How is this possible? They’re dead! Don’t even get me started on the cakes and muffins they have laid out.
  • They can’t heal themselves, or at least not quickly. They have bandages on their arms, cuts, scars, and therefore are vulnerable.
  • You can have animal vampires, which I’m guessing means that animals can go to heaven and hell, because if not, how could they be vampires? Isn’t the point that your soul is damned? Also, how are animals being turned? Are people turning them? That kind of takes away from the sexy vampire image we normally have in our heads.
  • The only thing it takes to turn you into a vampire is one bite. There’s no great ceremony, no death, no burial no nothing. Just one bite and a big suck.
  • They’re not especially strong. I get that in a world full of vampires, one is not much stronger than the other, but they’re also not that much stronger than humans.

Bottom Line: The only thing these vampires have are fangs, contact lenses, and immortality. They have none of the sexuality, blood-lust, or violent inclinations that make vampires so much fun to watch.

iPod Movie Overall:

Although they had some moments where things jump out at you, the film was not nearly as scary as it needed to be. It’s an interesting idea but it’s not very well executed and the story has a number of holes that are hard to look past. That being said, I’d watch it again before I watched Twilight!
